Developments spanning electoral contests in India, changes to U.S. visa application procedures, and escalating tensions in the Middle East marked a busy period in international news.
Political Landscape Shifts in India

U.S. Extends Social Media Screening for Visa Applicants
A notable policy change has been announced by the U.S. government impacting individuals seeking entry into the country. The government has extended requirements for screening social media accounts to encompass all individuals applying for F, M, or J non-immigrant visas. This expansion broadens the scope of digital background checks for categories including academic students (F visa), vocational students (M visa), and exchange visitors (J visa).
Heightened Tensions in the Middle East
The Middle East witnessed continued volatility, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear and security infrastructure. The Israeli military reportedly conducted air raids targeting Iran’s enriched uranium facility in Fordo. These strikes follow a previous U.S. bombing of the same Fordo facility on Saturday. Separately, a suspected airstrike reportedly hit the gate of Iran’s Evin prison in Tehran, a facility known for housing political prisoners.
Other Key Domestic Developments
Domestically, India saw progress on the literacy front. Tripura was officially declared the third fully literate state in India by the Union Ministry of Education, following the lead of Mizoram and Goa. The announcement was made at an event attended by Tripura’s Chief Minister, Manik Saha, highlighting the state’s educational achievement.
In legal news, the Supreme Court expressed strong disapproval of a concerning trend: accused persons reneging on promised payments after obtaining bail. The court deprecated this practice, signaling potential stricter approaches to bail conditions involving monetary assurances.
Meanwhile, counter-terrorism efforts continued with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) securing a five-day remand for two individuals. These individuals were arrested under suspicion of harbouring terrorists alleged to have been involved in the April Pahalgam terror attack. The remand allows the NIA further time for questioning and investigation into their suspected links to the incident.
