Nobel Laureates Pioneer Revolutionary ‘Molecular Sponges’

This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa of Kyoto University, Richard Robson of the University of Melbourne, and Omar M. Yaghi of the University of California, Berkeley. The trio received the prestigious award for their pioneering work in the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These advanced materials, often described as ‘molecular sponges’ or ‘new rooms for chemistry,’ are constructed from metal ions linked by organic molecules, forming porous crystalline structures with vast internal cavities.

The significance of MOFs lies in their exceptional versatility and tunable properties. Scientists can design these frameworks with specific pore sizes and chemical environments to capture, store, and even catalyse chemical reactions. Their potential applications are vast and transformative, including harvesting water from arid desert air, capturing carbon dioxide from industrial emissions, storing gases like hydrogen, removing pollutants from water, and serving as platforms for drug delivery and advanced sensors. India Showcases Infrastructure Prowess

In parallel with the scientific accolades, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagements in Maharashtra highlighted India’s commitment to modern infrastructure. The day saw the inauguration of Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), a project representing India’s largest Greenfield airport development. Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹19,650 crore, NMIA is poised to significantly boost India’s aviation capacity, ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), and position the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as a global hub with a multi-airport system. The airport features a striking lotus-shaped design, symbolizing Indian heritage, and incorporates advanced features such as an Automated People Mover, Sustainable Aviation Fuel storage, and multimodal connectivity options. Commercial flight operations are expected to commence by December 2025.

Further enhancing urban mobility, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated Phase 2B of the Mumbai Metro Line-3, also known as the Aqua Line. This segment extends the line from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, completing Mumbai’s first and only fully underground metro corridor. With a total cost exceeding ₹37,270 crore, this 33.5 km line with 27 stations is set to revolutionize commuting in the city, providing seamless access to key financial, administrative, and heritage areas of South Mumbai.

Complementing these infrastructure leaps, the Prime Minister launched ‘Mumbai One’, India’s first integrated common mobility app. This innovative platform allows commuters to use a single digital ticket and access travel information across 11 public transport operators, including metro lines, monorail, suburban railways, and bus services, simplifying urban travel. Additionally, initiatives like the Short-Term Employability Programme (STEP), aimed at upskilling youth in emerging technologies, were also launched, reflecting a holistic approach to national development.
